Does a simple steel ruler require calibration?

To what extent one must go for calibration of instruments ? Should we include equipment like a scale or weighing balance or a traditional heat chamber which displays temperature inside ?
My opinion is to get any instrument calibrated if it affects (directly or indirectly) product/process conformity.
But then everything can affect directly or indirectly if we go by an auditor's perspective.

With regards to the simple steel ruler (or any other measuring equipment), if you are using it to measure or monitor product or process quality then it needs to be calibrated. You may be interested in our Calibration Manual which answers these and many other questions when it comes to calibration.
