FMEA

by James
(Ontario, CA)

FMEA stands for Failure Mode Effects Analysis. It can be used in a couple of ways. For one, it records the history of defects and solutions to those issues. One can then review the FMEA when a defect occurs and then find the posssible causes of the issue.

You can also use the FMEA for design inputs of new products. It lets engineers know potential pitfalls of the process and design parameters. The FMEA lets you rank the potential defect and compare to other potential issues. Based on the score, one can then focus on the most important items.

Most automotive companies demand thier suppliers use FMEA. It is required by TS16949.
